What is a gearbox?
A gearbox is a mechanical device that changes the speed of a motor (RPM), increasing or decreasing the output torque of a car. A VW gearbox, for example, consists of a series of integrated gears within a box, working as a basic system of gears where one device transfers energy to another to increase torque and reduce speed.
They are considered the second element of the power train in an automobile and their main functions include:
- Shift to neutral to start an engine.
- Shift to reverse to move backwards.
- Changes gear ratio between crankshaft and vehicle drive wheels to provide the torque needed for certain conditions.
Signs you need a repair or a new VW gearbox
Having an issue with your VW gearbox can result in lots of danger, both for drivers and others. If you are having any of the below, you should arrange a repair as soon as possible to avoid any serious problems in the future.

- Slippage
An incredibly dangerous faulty problem, the slippage can make your gear change without warning, causing a sudden break or acceleration that can lead to serious accidents. If this happens at anytime, you will need an immediate replacement.
